We Have Moved!

Well this class really was "one of a kind!" I already miss them dearly and have caught myself calling my new students "pandas" or asking them to sit "panda posture." Unfortunately though, after getting MaRriEd I had to change up the blog and there was no way to just merge the accounts. Thank you to all my Parr Pandas! You made my first year unforgettable and irreplaceable. I will forever hold a special spot for each of you in my heart.

Oh How I Hate Goodbyes...

Well, you can definitely feel it and especially hear it...the end of the school year is here! The past few weeks have been EXTRA full of energy, colored pictures, hugs, and sweet compliments. My pandas all seem very eager and anxious to move into the first grade and they have been working hard to show me that they are more than capable. Me on the other hand...I am not so sure I am ready! I am proud to say I have only had one minor meltdown in front of them and rest assured they were there to comfort me. But let's be honest, tomorrow is a whole new story. I am sure I will be filling a bundle of emotions. I am sad to see them go, but I know they will all be off to do grand things. Hello From Afghanistan!

Hello Pandas --

How are all of you doing?  I've made it to Afghanistan and I just wanted to say hello.

It was a long journey to Afghanistan.  We flew our plane from Minnesota to St. Johns, Newfoundland, CN, then to near London, England.  The next day we flew to Bucharest, Romania and finally to Bagram, Afghanistan.

Afghanistan is very mountainous and dry.  Some of the mountains that we fly over are 24,000' tall.  That's 10'000 feet taller than the highest mountains of Colorado.  We have been very busy flying almost everyday here.  Our plane has carried many passengers and their cargo to many different locations in Afghanistan.  The roads are in very poor shape here and often the only way to reach villages is by airplane.

Thank you again for the very special blanket.  I have it hanging on my wall and it reminds me of the Pandas and everyone back in the US every day.  I've thought of your class and the special presentation many times since I've been here.

Scientists in the Making...

In Science we have been learning a lot about animals - insects, pets, birds, fish, etc. We know that in our own neighborhood there are a lot of these animals, sometimes, we just need to take a closer look. This week we grabbed our clipboards, our pencils, and focused on our eyes, ears, and touch to see what we could discover at Hoover on a Nature walk. Within our 15 minute exploration we discovered 37 birds, 12 caterpillars, 2 inchworms, 6 spiders, 5 butterflies, several insects and 1 dog across the street! Take a look at the our future scientists at work!

Sweet Send Off...

Breaking a Sweat...Breaking a Board

We had a great time today with our Friday Friend Master Winkler. He taught us about respect, focus, and self-control. He was a wonderful speaker and Aiden - one of Master Winkler's students - actually demonstrated how to break a board! He was very respectful, saying "Yes Sir!" and focusing on his Master's commands and directions. I even got in on the action! After listening carefully to Master Winkler's directions, focusing, and getting support from the students, I broke a board! It was quite a great time!

As a group we all practiced our listening skills, our focus skills, and our self-control. We are hoping that this discussion will help us remember to remain respectful of the rules, be a first-time listener, and give our best for the remainder of the school year! 

Just for Jason

Olivia's dad, Jason Ceminsky, is returning to Afghanistan on the morning of Thursday, May 12th. As a class we wanted him to know how much we appreciate his service, his courage, and bravery.
We wish him, and his fellow troop members, safety throughout their tour of duty. May he return home soon to a true hero's welcome.

Wiggle, Waddle, and Witness the Wonder!

So...we are finally learning about animals in Science and we all know that the best way to learn is by experiencing hands-on, real-world learning. Therefore, we decided read stories about animals, do some whole group lessons on animals, write about animals, and interact with animals! Yes, I said it, kindergartens interacting with LIVE animals....scary...yet interesting thought.
Last week we brought in the goldfish to show one example of an amazing creature that may live in the water. One of my student's begged for me to bring in an Anglerfish. I explained that not all fish are exactly friendly fish! We discussed a variety of characteristics about fish - as well as how to care for them, how to feed them, and responsibilities of having a pet like a fish.

We also discussed warm-blooded animals like mammals and birds. We were fortunate enough to have an grandparent bring in an incubator filled with eggs. The incubator helps keep the eggs moist and warm. They were brought in yesterday - just in time because the first egg crack yesterday and three chicks today! My classroom, and the entire dome, was literally alive with the sounds of chirping all day - not only from the chicks, but the students too! Several times I caught them sneaking off to catch a glimpse the latest waddle or newest crack in the egg. Sneaky little detectives they are!

The last thing we investigated was cold-blooded animals. We were scientists as we brought in worms into our classroom. We used our 5 senses to discover unique features about them and also discuss interesting facts.

Overall, we have a good sense of some of the amazing animals that we may see everyday, but we still know there is a lot to learn. As one student put it "We gotta stay in school so we can learn about all this stuff, because t.v. doesn't let you play with everything like school does!"

Ready, Set, Tie!

There are many goals that we strive to reach by the end of the year. Some of these goals are academic based such as knowing our letter names and sounds, skip counting, reading books, creating number stories, etc. Other goals that we have are more developmental. Well as the year went on there was one particular area that I didn't see as much "growth in as I was hoping for. So I decided we needed a plan, moreso a program to help my pandas reach their goal.

On Monday we began our Shoe Tying Club. We talked about it all last week and covered all the rules. This eliminates a lot of questions and confusion BEFORE the club actually opens.

Here's the Rules:

1. You must tie your shoes at least three different times on three different days.

2. You must only show me you can tie your shoes first thing when you come in the morning, after recess, or during kid time– any other time will not count.

3. You will get a check for each time you can successfully tie your shoes, on your own, with no help or guidance from me.

4. After three checks, you’re in the club!

What do you Get?!

1. A fancy card, prominently

displayed in the classroom, announcing to the world that you can tie your shoes!

2. Your choice of fancy, fun, fantastic shoelaces !

3. You will become Miss Parr’s assistant and be able to help others learn to tie their shoes.

Needless to say I have never seen such determination from my kiddos. They come in practice their skills - showing me their improvement from the night before. They spend their brain break quietly practicing. They even spend their kid time helping each other and reciting rhymes. It's magical. And it's working~

Now...how to quit those knots from occuring...

 In our classroom we are working very hard to become fluent readers and expressive writers. We have done such a grand job that we would like to broadcast our ideas with the world. When we finish partner reading our books, we work as a team, or by ourselves to create sentences about the knowledge that we've learned. Do You Believe?!

Today we had the tooth fairy come to visit our kindergarten classrooms. The entire day there was a buzz in the air about our "Friday Friend" and who he/she might be. When we walked into the room where our guest was waiting the kids were beaming. 

Was it Cinderella? Was it a Princess? 

When she announced that she was indeed the Tooth Fairy the questions started pouring out:

Do you still have my tooth?

Why did you give her a dollar and me a quarter?

Do you remember my name?

What do you do with all the teeth that you collect?

Did you go to college to become a tooth fairy?

Can you show us how to fly?

Now...if I was the Tooth Fairy, I would be stressed. All these questions and all these little eyes waiting for you to remember them. But she passed with flying colors. She turned up her smile and on her  magic wand and she was quickly talking about keeping healthy teeth, going to the dentist, and handing out tooth care goodies. 

Hopefully this Friday Friend brought in some new healthy habits, as well as firm believers that the Tooth Fairy really does exist.

March Madness!

Can you believe it?! March is already coming to a close. We have been very busy with NWEA testing, our Spring Concert, St. Patrick's Day, and Conferences. I realized that I haven't had as much time to blog as I would like, so we wanted to give you a glimpse into all our March mayhem:

1. We recieved our NWEA scores back and almost everyone met, or exceeded their goal! Miss Parr was SO excited that she did a flip for us that she promised. Then we all kissed our brain for working so hard! 

2. A lucky leprechaun came into our classroom and left us wonderful gifts for our kindness and for being such a great class! He also left us a Magic Tree House book, "Leprechaun in Late Winter," that we read and loved! We all felt very special!

3. We started podcasting our knowledge! We have shared a lot of giggles listening to our voices. We are all destined to be future news anchors and/or radio broadcasters. Podcasts to be posted soon :)

4. We have had Mrs. Nykanen come in to help with our Math Stations. We learned about objects that will/will not float. We also used our muscles to learn about levers and their fulcrums. Yup, we are definitely getting smarter everyday!

5. Mrs. Ceminsky came in several times to help us get organized and to test our knowledge through reading and math assessments. 

6. We sang at our first music concert! We were great gallopers and sweet sounding singers! The audience seemed very impressed with our skills.

7. Throughout the month Miss Parr accidentally called us 1st graders several times! We are growing and learning so much lately that we've have been acting, writing, reading, and behaving like first graders!

8. We have been partner reading a lot more lately! We are becoming fluent readers and Miss Parr loves to sit and listen to us as we work together to sound out words, read with expression, and make predictions.

9. It has finally gotten nice out! We have spent more time outside getting our wiggles out and soaking up the sun! We are enjoying it very much! 

10. We have had the BIG kids (4th-5th graders) come into OUR classroom to read with us, help us with homework, and assist with our projects. We love having them with us because they are teaching us responsibilities that we will have as we get older!

As you can tell we've been very busy learning, growing and playing. We hope you enjoyed hearing about our adventures and we will talk to you again soon!

The Magical Mystery

Well it is finally St. Patty's Day and it definitely brought us a day filled with luck and laughter! When we go back from Music today there was a note on the SMART Board saying:

Walk around the Dome twice

And I will bring you something nice

For all the kindness you brought to me

I will give you back your green!

So as a class we quietly walked around the dome twice. When we walked back in this is what we saw:

There were chairs upside down, a bag filled with our green goodies, and a NEW note on the SMART Board! Before we fixed anything we sat at the carpet and read the note as a class. This is what it said!

I had a great time playing with your green toys and flipping your room around. To thank you I left some magic powder on in the "Leprechaun in Late Winter" book you are reading.  I only give this magical powder to kind kindergartners, so you should feel very honored.

Did you find it yet? What does it smell like to you? 

Well, in order to make it magical you have to follow a few rules.

1. Captains, grab the magical milk that I placed on your tables.

2. Mix all the magical milk cartons and the magical powder together.

3. As you stir, say these words:

Leprechauns, Leprechauns, Shamrocks Seen

MAGIC POWDER Turn Green! 

Well we followed the directions and I we opened the magical milk we discovered that it was already green! But we poured it in the bowl and started stirring. We recited the poem 3 times and BOOM! It happened! The powder turned in a pudding mixture. 

Miss Parr took a small taste first to make sure it was good and then we all sat down and enjoyed the magical mixture that our friend left for us. We talked as a class about why the leprechaun was so nice to our class. These are some of the ideas we came up with:

1. We found his hat and gave it back so he thought we were kind.

2. We let him borrow our green items. 

3. We are nice friends to have and maybe he wants to be our friend. 

4. We are polite pandas and leprechauns like polite people.

Overall we felt very lucky on this St. Patricks day and we wanted to share our luck with you! Hope your day was filled with as much excitement as ours!

What Now?

Monday morning brought many suprises! When we got back from gym class all our toys were pulled out and we discovered a special note on a door.

Dear Pandas,

I popped in to visit, but you were not here! I have a problem that I hope you can solve. While I was dancing around your room, I seemed to of lost my hat! I was really hoping that you could look around and find it for me. If you can find it, I will come back to get it! Oh, I also borrowed a few more green items. I hope you don’ t mind!

Lucky Leprechaun

So...it is a leprechaun after all! And not only did he leave his hat behind, he left two books for us (Leprechaun in Late Winter and That's What Leprechauns Do) to read, and a trail of shamrocks behind! We followed the trail as a class and we did a little bit of hunting and we found the hat! It was hidden in the front of the room. Therefore, in math we made a tally chart to decide if we should give the hat back or not. After graphing our results, as a class we decided that we should give the hat back because it is a kind thing to do.
Hopefully this act of kindness pays off!

Can You Help Us Uncover the Mystery?!

We recently found a note on my door today and we are trying to figure out who it could possibly be from. This is what it said:

Dear Pandas, 

I LOVE green, 

And soon NONE will be seen!

We discovered that I am missing my green scissors, my green crayons, our green classroom bins, and our green dollar bills that were on our classroom door! Now, some of my pandas think that it may be a teacher borrowing these items, some think it is another teacher playing a prank, some think that it is one of you, and some even think it may be a REAL Leprechaun visiting our classroom! If you have ANY information please comment below and we'll read them as a class! We'd love to hear from you and don't worry, we'll keep you updated if we hear anymore news!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”

All week we celebrated Dr. Seuss’s Birthday (March 2nd) by reading Dr. Seuss Books like “The Cat in the Hat,” “The Lorax,” “Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You?”, and Mr. Kamphoff even came in and read “Oh! The Places You’ll Go!”  We also created writing projects where the students had to answer “What you would do if you’re mother asked you?”, referring to the Cat in the Hat story.
On Friday we went to MSU for Dr. Seuss’ Birthday Party! We had a wonderful time there and did a lot of interactive activities to practice our letters, numbers, and sound recognition.

100th Day Activites

100th Day of School!

Today was a wonderful day! We did so many activities to celebrate our 100th day of school.
We started the day with everyone piling in wearing 100 objects and carrying their 100 objects! I was classic to see the creativity and time that went into their shirts!  We then created our 100 item necklaces created with Fruit Loops – clearly it was a wonderful accessory to their shirts!
Next we added on the accessories by creating 100 Day Crowns. They not only had to cut and color the crown they also had to mark it with 100 tally marks – a new skill we’re working really hard on!
For reading stations we also had to show what we’d look like in 100 years! Students had to describe some characteristics of older people to complete this challenge. I heard: crinkly, soft, wrinkly, no teeth, white hair, gray hair, wobbly, shaky, and even no hair! Then they had to take a paper towel, crinkle it up and open it – creating a wrinkly face. That was their starting point. From there the had to draw details of what they would wear, what their hair would look like, and who would be around them. Look below for their creations!
In the afternoon we had some math related activities to celebrate reaching the 100th day of school. First we went on a penny hunt. I hid numbered pennies around the room and once the students found them, they had to match them up to the number grid. We found all but 2 pennies – they are still MIA! I am sure one day I’ll come across them!

Then they had to create a 100-item snack.  Yes, 100 items!  The students moved around the tables in groups to create their snack. We also created and counted 100 students on our school bus! Then lastly we had to sort our 100 objects.  Students brought in a variety of objects so it was fun to see them all laid out.
An additional thanks to Jennifer Ceminsky and Roxanne Larson, they were in the room in the afternoon to make sure everything went smoothly and everyone completed their sorting.
Tell your child to kiss their brain, because they successful passed the 100th day of school!

 

Braeden will be a dad when he's 100 because that's when you can be a dad!

Katie wants to be a teacher forever!

 Alex will just play outside when he is older because he won't be in school anymore!

 

Olivia will play frisbee outside when she's 100 because she won't have to work anymore! 

President's Day

On Tuesday we celebrated Presidents day by talking about some famous president's in our history, what significant changes that they made, how they became president, and where they live. We also discussed how they all have the potential to grow up and be great leaders and even presidents! 

We created George Washington hats and completed writing projects on: "When I am president I will..."

Happy Valentine's Day!

Valentines, Candy, and Games...OH MY!

What a wonderful day we had on Friday and I have so many parents to thank for that! The entire day was filled with excitement, anticipation, stories, exploring words through detective work, and learning!
The last hour of the day we held a Valentine Party. We ended up having eight parents altogether which helped tremendously. We started by opening up our Valentine's and investigating to see all the yummy treats we had inside. Then we had Kahle's mom come in to be our Friday Friend. She read one of her favorite Valentine stories, "Franklin's Valentine" by Paulette Bourgeois. She came in for Health Helpers day as well. She is very animated and the students love when she comes in to read to them!
We then set up five stations:
Station One was a Love Story Reading Station, once again Lynn read to the students. This time she read through, "Be My Valentine, Amelia Bedelia" by Herman Parish. The kids really seemed to enjoy the book and having that time to let their bellies relax!
Station Two was an Ice Cream Station! Not just plain Ice Cream, but we created an Ice Cream Sundae station where each student got to create their own personalized sundaes, adding whichever toppings they enjoyed. There were a lot of messy, yet smiling faces at this station! Thank you Jason for making sure everyone was full and having fun!
Station Three was a Memory Match Station. I think the students spent more time giggling at this station then matching their cards. Braeden's dad, Jim was creating his own guessing games with each group. It was very entertaining to watch!
Station Four was a Surprise Station! Anna's dad, Garrick did a very good job when I handed him this station. It was just "supposed" to be a word match station, but since I had enough parents, I decided to let them open a surprise balloon gift that I found. If you haven't seen them, you must! The kids were in awe of them! You just hit this little bag and there is a chemical reaction that makes an inner bad inflate it. Some students were nervous, where others were very curious! Thanks for being so adventurous Garrick!
Station Five was Heart Bingo Station. The students love playing Bingo. we play it with our site words, letters, and beginning sounds. This is a great way to practice Capital Letters, Lowercase Letters, and Star Words at home! Kenneth's dad, John, brought extra treats to hand out to the special winners! Thank you John for practicing letters and playing Bingo! Since I had so many parents I had the opportunity to take a lot of pictures and even some video recordings! Hope you enjoy the slide show and hope there weren't too many terrible tummy aches when they got home!

Fun in February

Oh how I love February! 

January was just an off month where we have to get back into our routine, get DIBELed, push through the cold, and overcome the many struggles with our inside out snowpants, tough boots, and missing mittens!

But now it's time to put away the mitten art, snowflakes, and snowmen and bring out the groundhogs, hearts, and 100th day projects! Love is in the air and I am loving it! Here are a few Valentine projects we've created! 

Remember that our Valentine Party is on Friday, February 12th from 1:30-2:30. We will play games, open valentines, eat ice cream sundaes, play bingo,  and read stories! Don't you just love Valentine's Day?! 

Groundhog's Day

On Friday, we discussed the tradition behind Groundhog's Day, read a short story about Groundhogs, created a art project, and then the students had to vote on the Smart Board indicating if they thought the groundhog would see his shadow, or not see his shadow. They all had different reasons for their choice:

"The groundhog told me what would happen so I know that it's going to keep snowing."

"I think that it will be cloudy out, so then when the groundhog comes out he will bring the sun with him."

"The groundhog doesn't want to live in the deep, dark, dirty den anymore, so he will want it to be sunny."

Well the poles are in today and after reading "Ten Grouchy Groundhogs," we watched the video stating:

On February 2, 2010 Punxsutawney Phil, the Groundhog from Pennsylvania proclaimed:

“As the sky shines bright above me, my shadow I see beside me.

Six weeks more of winter it will be!”

I guess I'll go grab my scarfs and mittens again!

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

"Martin Luther King they say, thought of friendship everyday. He just wanted you and me, to live together peacefully."

Today we talked about Martin Luther King Jr because we will not have school Monday. Throughout the day we had a lot of mini lessons that we broke out into to discuss who he was, why he was important, and create projects from what we learned. Throughout, the day a lot of interesting statements were made, that made me appreciate their hearts.

As we were painting our hands one student looked at me and said: "Miss Parr, my dad's hands aren't either of these colors, would Mr. King still want to be his friend?"

I had another student that saw a picture of Martin Luther King and said: "That's weird, a long time ago we had a dark King. But Obama is our first dark president."

After watching a video on Martin Luther a student went home and asked: "Since I am black like Martin Luther King Jr, will I get shot when I am older too?"

It is little comments like these that I receive everyday that make my job completely worthwhile. They are my constant reminders that they truly have so much to learn about life, yet they aren't afraid to question their thinking.

And that, is a very powerful thing.

Practice Makes Perfect! Right?!

Well today we were DIBELed for the second time this year. For those of you that don't know, DIBELS stands for Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills. It is an assessment system designed to assess all students' progress. The students are tested three times a year; Fall, Mid-Year, and again in the Spring.
As a teacher it is my job to make sure that they are all prepared, knowledgeable, and making adequate progress. Therefore, it isn't only a stressful time for students, but it is also stressful for the teacher!
Once again, being new to this whole system, I felt fairly confident that all my students were prepared to the best of their ability. We had practiced the expectations, the questions, and the rules. Today, I had to take them down right after lunch, so yes, no brain break for these kiddos! And boy, was it a learning adventure!
I walk my students down three minutes early, in alphabetical order. Each one was carrying their white boards, markers, and socks to practice their words while they waited. Sounds peaceful enough right?
Well the students were all doing their job, but just so happens that I forgot to do my job! I forgot to bring down ALL their test booklets from the previous testing. So I briskly walk - because running is against the rules - all the way back to my classroom, at the other end of the school, and then briskly walk back and hand them the booklets.
The test administrator politely smiles at me and then says, "Now do you have their scoring slips?" And off I go again, briskly walking back to my room again to get their scoring sheets. And my luck didn't stop then. During our testing period, we were outside their 4th grade room lockers and their lunch break happened to fall during our testing period. Therefore we had to have everyone quietly stand up, move to the other side of the hallway, and reposition themselves in alphabetically order - which is always interesting to witness 20 kindergartners do!
After it was all said and done, I am proud to say WE survived and my pandas did very well! Hopefully, the more times I do this routine, the more I will perfect the procedures. Because with time and patience, practice really does make perfect!

Wonderful Words

Oh yes, it is happening and it is beautiful.

During the first half of the year I really pushed the importance of reading the letters, remembering what sounds they make, blending words, and writing the letters correctly. Not to say that we are not still practicing those things, but they are starting to write. Truly write.

They all have their own notebooks which they use to "journal" about their weekend, or make rough drafts for their weekly writing. But I wanted to really see how far some students could push themselves when writing. Once/If they finished their reading station today they were to write about their favorite part of school. This is some of the sentences I got back from a variety of levels:

I like to pla at kid tim (I like to play at kid time)

I like to rit big werds (I like to write big words)

I like to sig songs nd dans! (I like to sing songs and dance)

I like to read big books and rit words. (I like to read big books and write words)

I like to play with mi frends. I like to dans with ms parr. (I like to play with my friends. I like to dance with Miss Parr)

You can clearly tell that they are all working on becoming good decoders. Granted, some may be further along than others, but they are all giving their best and learning! What an exciting day :)

Welcome Back and Welcome Here!

So, the day is finally here! My pandas finally returned after a 12 day break. Now, at first I must admit that this didn't seem very long. But, soon into the break, my ideas changed. Now, don't get me wrong, I am not saying that the break was too long, or unnecessary. But being a first year teacher, I wasn't sure what to expect when those kiddos came walking through our classroom door this morning. I found myself pacing, panicking, and wondering what it is going to be like when my Pandas come back from their holiday break. You see, Kindergartners are so much about routine, structure, and schedules, that although it's only been two weeks, what if that was TOO long!?

But let me tell you, it was magical. They checked in on the SMARTboard, gave their welcome back hugs and/or high fives, they sang rise and shine, they hung their art projects on the "Miss Parr's lil' Picasso's" wall that they completed over break,they sat criss cross applesauce, and so much more. They were just grand.

That is why I wanted to create this blog. For those little moments that mean so much. My first semester was FILLED with them. Those little worries, wonders, experiences, and memories that happen day in and day out. In a sense, it is my open journal to share with those who might be experiencing the same first year wonders, it might be for the parents that want to know "what really goes on in Kindergarten." Some days it might provide a comic relief, while other days I may just ask questions and share ideas.
